Gaining International Experience During Your Apprenticeship

Today, an apprenticeship is about much more than learning a profession. Those who are open to new experiences can broaden their horizons beyond national borders. In cooperation with the Louis-Leitz School, our apprentices have the opportunity to complete a funded internship abroad through the Erasmus+ programme.

The European Union's Erasmus+ programme supports apprentices in gaining practical work experience abroad for several weeks. In addition to financial support, Erasmus+ offers the opportunity to improve language skills, experience different working methods, discover new cultures, and develop both personally and professionally. The experience gained not only strengthens personal confidence but also provides valuable skills for future working life.

Our apprentice, Mr Berni, took advantage of this opportunity and spent three weeks in Dublin. In the following report, he shares his experience.

“These three weeks helped me grow as a person.”

Through the Erasmus+ programme organised by the Louis-Leitz School, I had the opportunity to complete a three-week internship in Dublin. During my stay, I worked in a pub in the heart of the Irish capital, where I gained practical experience as a waiter and bartender. At the same time, I lived with an Irish host family, which allowed me to experience everyday life and Irish culture first-hand.

Looking back, what impressed me most was how quickly Dublin began to feel like home, despite being around 1,200 kilometres away. Of course, there were cultural differences, and at first the strong Irish accent was quite challenging. However, with each passing day, I became more confident speaking English and found it easier to connect with the people around me.
Although working in a pub had little to do with my apprenticeship at Kiefer, I gained an incredible amount from the experience. Today, I feel much more confident interacting with people, communicating in English, and adapting to unfamiliar situations. Above all, I realised how much personal growth is possible when you have the courage to step outside your comfort zone.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to Kiefer Klimatechnik GmbH for granting me leave during these three weeks, and to the Louis-Leitz School and Erasmus+ for organising and financially supporting this internship abroad. I can only encourage other apprentices to take advantage of this opportunity. An international internship not only provides valuable professional and personal experience, but also creates memories and impressions that will stay with you for a lifetime.
